KNOW THE SIGNS – PATIENT BROKERING
PATIENT BROKERING & KICKBACKS
Patient brokering is a practice that has unfortunately been growing. Florida receives quite a bit of attention in the media regarding the fraud and kickbacks between recovery housing providers and treatment centers. A recent article highlights the ongoing challenge and how it affects the individuals who are seeking addiction and support services as well as their families. Florida has recently passed a bill to address patient brokering including between recovery housing and treatment providers.
Patient Brokering is defined in the “FLORIDA PATIENT BROKERING ACT, a criminal statute which specifically prohibits any health care provider or health care facility from giving or receiving any form of remuneration in exchange for referrals, regardless of the source of payment for the applicable service or product.”
Of course this issue isn’t exclusive to Florida but they have been aggressive in combating it. Ohio also has laws regarding “kickbacks.” If you are interested in learning more about the topic you may want to contact the Ohio Attorney’s General Office.
